Kuwait’s HH Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah opened the 45th session of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Supreme Council by welcoming the leaders and guests. He expressed gratitude to Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani for his leadership during the previous summit in Doha. Sheikh Meshal emphasized that this meeting, hosted by Kuwait, showcases the GCC’s unity, strength, and commitment to enhancing joint efforts. He stressed the importance of expanding economic integration, diversifying income sources, facilitating trade, supporting local industries, and fostering innovation in fields like artificial intelligence to improve regional and global competitiveness.
The Amir noted that education is a key pillar in building an integrated Gulf economy, aiming to inspire the youth to contribute to the region’s prosperity. He reflected on the GCC’s progress since its formation in 1981, which has resulted in significant achievements in economic growth and security.
On the international stage, Sheikh Meshal called for the UN Security Council to ensure the implementation of resolutions related to the Gaza conflict, halt violence, and secure international protection for civilians. He reiterated strong support for Palestine and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with international resolutions. The Amir also acknowledged the mediation efforts of Qatar, Egypt, and the US in achieving a ceasefire in Gaza and welcomed steps toward de-escalation in Lebanon.
Sheikh Meshal expressed optimism about improving relations with Iran and emphasized the importance of dialogue in resolving regional challenges. He urged Iraq to resolve maritime navigation issues and continue working on the demarcation of Kuwaiti-Iraqi maritime borders.
During the summit’s closed session, GCC leaders affirmed their support for the Palestinian cause and stressed the importance of Palestinian sovereignty over lands occupied since 1967. They also acknowledged the growing influence of GCC countries in addressing both regional and global political and economic challenges.
In closing, HH the Amir hosted a luncheon for the GCC leaders and expressed appreciation to all those involved in organizing the summit, acknowledging their efforts in ensuring its success.
