Kuwait Ranks 5th Best Gulf City for Expatriates: Mercer Quality of Life Index

In the latest Mercer Quality of Life Index, Kuwait emerged as the fifth-best city in the Gulf for expatriates, ninth in the Arab world, and 139th globally. The annual index, published by the global consulting firm Mercer, evaluates 450 cities worldwide based on living standards for expatriates and their families.

Regional Rankings in the Gulf and Arab World:
1st: Dubai (Middle East leader)
2nd: Abu Dhabi
3rd: Doha (109th globally)
4th: Muscat (119th globally)
5th: Kuwait City
Key Ranking Criteria
Mercer’s methodology incorporates factors such as political stability, healthcare quality, housing, cultural opportunities, environmental conditions (e.g., air quality), traffic management, travel options, and education access. These criteria highlight aspects that influence expatriates’ decision-making when relocating.

Global Leaders in Quality of Life:
The top-ranking cities globally emphasize sustainability, safety, and infrastructure:

Zurich, Switzerland – Renowned for efficient public services, low crime, and cultural vibrancy.
Vienna, Austria
Geneva, Switzerland
Copenhagen, Denmark
Auckland, New Zealand
Perspective on Gulf Cities
Kuwait stands out for its stable infrastructure and moderate expatriate living standards, despite facing challenges in traffic management and air quality. Dubai and Abu Dhabi outshine other Gulf cities with their well-planned urban infrastructure, entertainment options, and global connectivity.

Global Head of Mobility’s Insight
According to Yvonne Traber, Mercer’s global head of mobility, digital nomadism and flexible work arrangements have heightened the importance of balancing a city’s quality of life with its cost of living. Cities that excel in both domains are increasingly attractive to expatriates and organizations managing global talent.

Bottom 10 Cities
At the other end of the spectrum, cities like Khartoum (241st), Baghdad, and Bangui were ranked lowest, often grappling with political instability, lack of basic infrastructure, and safety concerns.

Kuwait’s rank reflects steady progress, showing potential for further improvement in areas like cultural engagement and environmental standards. It remains a viable option for expatriates seeking a balanced lifestyle in the Gulf.
