Why UAE Residents Feel Happier During Winter: Insights from Experts

While many Western countries associate winter with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) due to reduced sunlight and colder temperatures, the UAE presents a contrasting scenario. In the UAE, winter is celebrated for its cooler climate, creating an environment ripe for outdoor activities and social gatherings.

Resha Erheim, a mental health counsellor at Wise Mind Centre in Dubai, explains that sunlight plays a key role in regulating circadian rhythms, affecting sleep, mood, and energy levels. In the West, reduced sunlight during winter disrupts this balance, often leading to mood and energy imbalances. Conversely, UAE residents eagerly anticipate winter after enduring months of intense summer heat. The cooler temperatures allow them to enjoy outdoor picnics, barbecues, desert camping, and water sports. The season also sees an influx of outdoor markets, festivals, and cultural events, enhancing the country’s vibrant atmosphere.

Dr. Erheim emphasizes that the cooler weather contributes to improved mood, reduced stress, and increased creativity and motivation. Engaging in physical activities like jogging, hiking, or cycling becomes more accessible, promoting physical health. Additionally, the crisp air and serene environment encourage mindfulness and relaxation, enhancing gratitude and mental clarity. Cooler nights also improve sleep quality, leaving residents feeling rejuvenated.

UAE resident Mir Murtaza Khurshid highlights the enjoyment winter brings, enabling people to unwind, catch up with friends, and explore quieter spots like Hatta. The season contrasts sharply with summers, which can limit outdoor activities due to extreme heat.

In Western countries, shorter daylight hours during winter often result in lower serotonin levels, disrupting circadian rhythms and leading to fatigue and lethargy. Dr. Erheim explains that this phenomenon contributes to the prevalence of SAD in the West. Interestingly, SAD is relatively uncommon in the UAE due to year-round sunlight. However, Dr. Joseph Youssef from Medcare Royal Speciality Hospital notes that UAE residents may experience summer SAD due to isolation caused by extreme heat and reduced natural light indoors.

Treatment options for SAD include light therapy, regular exercise, consistent sleep routines, and spending time outdoors. Dr. Erheim suggests five tips for staying active and maintaining mood during winter:

Spend time outdoors to absorb natural light.
Exercise regularly to boost energy and endorphins.
Maintain a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients.
Establish a consistent sleep schedule.
Stay socially connected to enhance motivation and happiness.
For UAE residents, winter is more than just a season—it’s a time of renewed energy, outdoor exploration, and social bonding, making it the happiest time of the year for many.
