Oman experienced two minor earthquakes recently, as confirmed by the Sultan Qaboos University Earthquake Monitoring Center (EMC). On January 1, 2025, a tremor measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale struck the Wilayat of Shalim and Al Halaniyat Island in Dhofar Governorate. The earthquake occurred approximately 190 kilometers northeast of Salalah at a depth of 6 kilometers. Fortunately, no casualties or significant damage have been reported.
Earlier, a smaller earthquake measuring 0.9 magnitude was recorded in the Al Amarat region of Muscat. This incident, with its epicenter located 16 kilometers southwest of Muscat at a depth of 5 kilometers, caused no harm. Authorities continue to monitor seismic activities in the region to ensure public safety and preparedness.
