Cable Damage Disrupts Kuwait’s Internet Services

Kuwait’s internet services were disrupted on Saturday after a fault was identified in one of the seven international cables that connect the country to global internet networks, the Communications and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA) confirmed. In a statement issued to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), CITRA explained that the affected telecommunications company is actively working to repair the damaged cable and restore normal service as soon as possible. The authority emphasized its ongoing coordination efforts to resolve the issue and restore full internet functionality.

CITRA also stated that it was investigating the incident to ensure the affected company adopts appropriate measures, such as utilizing alternative cables, to prevent future disruptions. The regulatory body reiterated its commitment to monitoring the performance of telecommunications companies in Kuwait to ensure high-quality services for both residents and businesses.

Kuwait has previously experienced similar disruptions caused by damage to undersea cables, which are essential for international internet connectivity. Notably, a major incident in 2008 resulted in widespread outages across the Gulf region, including Kuwait, due to a cable cut. Another disruption in 2015 occurred due to maintenance-related issues with international cable networks. These incidents have highlighted the need for robust infrastructure planning and contingency measures to protect against connectivity interruptions.

CITRA assures Kuwait’s residents and businesses that steps are being taken to strengthen the resilience of the country’s internet infrastructure and minimize the impact of such disruptions in the future.
