AI Cameras Record 18,778 Violations in 15 Days; Traffic Fatalities Decline

Kuwait’s newly installed AI-powered traffic cameras detected 18,778 violations within just 15 days in December 2024, according to Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Bu Hassan, Assistant Director of Traffic Awareness at the General Traffic Department. Among these violations, 4,944 were related to mobile phone use while driving. The cameras also monitor seat belt usage for both drivers and front-seat passengers, with violations attributed to vehicle owners.

Lt. Colonel Bu Hassan emphasized the importance of seat belt usage and attributed a decline in traffic-related fatalities—from 296 in 2023 to 284 in 2024—to the proactive efforts of the General Traffic Department under Major General Yousef Al-Khudda. Awareness campaigns by the Traffic Awareness Department and the Ministry of Interior’s Security Media Department have significantly contributed to this improvement despite the rise in vehicles, roads, and licenses.

Colonel Othman Al-Gharib, Director of the Security Media Department, reinforced the impact of these initiatives, urging drivers to avoid mobile phone use and always fasten seat belts. He highlighted the department’s round-the-year traffic awareness campaigns and their swift response to public concerns via social media.

The AI cameras are part of an ongoing effort to enhance road safety and reduce fatalities through advanced monitoring and public education.
