A ski lift malfunction at the Astún resort in Spain’s Pyrenees mountain range left at least 30 people injured, with 10 requiring hospital treatment, including two in critical condition, according to emergency services in Aragon’s northern region.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, reportedly involved a cable coming loose, causing chairs to bounce and throwing skiers to the ground. Witnesses described the chaos, with around 80 people initially trapped on the chairlifts. Social media videos showed injured individuals lying on the snow beneath the lift.
Rescue operations involved several helicopters evacuating those stranded and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals. Fernando Beltran, a government representative in Aragon, confirmed that all affected skiers had been evacuated and were receiving medical care.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his shock over the accident, offering his support to the injured and their families. Meanwhile, the ski resort’s management stated on X (formerly Twitter) that they were cooperating with emergency services and extended their solidarity to those impacted by the incident.
The cause of the malfunction remains under investigation.
