Revitalization Plans Underway for Al-Omariya Zoo to Restore Its Former Glory

The Director of the Public Authority for Agriculture, Nasser Taqi, has announced initiatives to revitalize the Al-Omariya Zoo, aiming to enhance its facilities and introduce a wider variety of animal species. The objective is to transform the zoo into a prime tourist attraction, reigniting its appeal for animal enthusiasts after nearly seven years of inactivity.

Taqi made this announcement during a recent visit to the zoo by the Governor of Farwaniya, Sheikh Athbi Nasser Al-Athbi, who inspected the premises alongside a delegation that included Brigadier General Muhammad Mutlaq Al-Mutairi, Brigadier General Nayef Al-Hajraf, Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Kandari (Director of the Zoo), and other officials. The visit focused on evaluating the current state of the zoo and identifying the requirements for its restoration.

Officials conducted a comprehensive tour of the facilities, during which they reviewed ongoing projects and discussed future plans to enhance the zoo’s infrastructure and attract more visitors. The discussions also emphasized the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders to address deficiencies and realize the zoo’s full potential as a vital agricultural and recreational asset.

Sheikh Athbi highlighted the significance of the zoo in preserving Kuwait’s agricultural and animal heritage, advocating for a cooperative effort to expedite its redevelopment. The governor reiterated his commitment to monitoring local facilities, supporting sustainable development, protecting the environment, and promoting tourism in the region.

Established in 1966 and opened in 1968, the Al-Omariya Zoo has long been a cherished destination for Kuwaiti families, offering both entertainment and educational value. Nasser Taqi confirmed that studies are underway to enhance the zoo’s animal diversity and improve visitor facilities, ensuring it remains a cornerstone of local recreation. He also clarified that the zoo will not be transferred to the General Organization for Social Insurance, which is currently planning the Grand Zoo project in the Kabd area.

These efforts aim to breathe new life into the Al-Omariya Zoo, reaffirming its role as a key recreational and cultural landmark in Kuwait.
