Kerala Budget 2025: ₹750 Crore Allocated for Wayanad Rehabilitation

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Finance Minister KN Balagopal has unveiled the state budget for the upcoming fiscal year, with a significant focus on the rehabilitation of Wayanad. A key highlight of the budget is the ₹750 crore allocation for recovery efforts in the district, which suffered massive destruction due to the 2024 landslides. The funds will be used to restore affected areas and support the livelihoods of local communities.

In his budget speech, Balagopal also noted that Kerala has successfully navigated its recent financial crisis through strategic fiscal management and policy measures.

2024 Wayanad Landslides: A Recap

The Wayanad landslides, which occurred on July 30, 2024, caused extensive devastation across multiple villages, including Punjirimattom, Mundakkai, Chooralmala, and Vellarimala in Meppadi panchayat, Vythiri taluk. Triggered by heavy monsoon rains, the landslides led to the collapse of hillsides, making it one of Kerala’s worst disasters in recent years.

Impact of the Disaster:

  • Over 250 lives lost
  • Around 400 people injured
  • More than 100 missing

Experts have attributed the catastrophe to factors such as deforestation, seismic activity, unregulated construction, and climate change. The newly allocated budget aims to rebuild infrastructure, rehabilitate displaced families, and implement preventive measures to reduce the risk of future disasters.
