Saudi Arabia has introduced new visa options to facilitate travel for Umrah pilgrims from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations. In addition to the traditional Umrah visa, citizens of GCC countries can now enter the Kingdom using either a transit visa or a tourist visa, making the pilgrimage to Mecca more accessible and cost-effective. These initiatives align with Saudi Arabia’s ambitious Vision 2030 project, aimed at enhancing religious tourism and visitor experiences.
The recently launched transit visa permits visitors to stay in Saudi Arabia for up to 96 hours. This visa is particularly beneficial for air travelers with layovers in Saudi Arabia, allowing them to perform Umrah during their stopover. To avail of this visa, passengers must book their flights through Saudi-based airlines. Applications for the electronic transit visa can be submitted via the airline’s portal. Upon approval, travelers will receive an e-visa, enabling them to visit Mecca and Medina before continuing their journey.
Additionally, GCC nationals can apply for a tourist visa, which allows them to explore Saudi Arabia’s rich historical and cultural heritage while also performing Umrah. The application process for this visa is available through official Saudi government platforms and online portals.
For those arriving with a dedicated Umrah visa, it is important to note that pilgrims must depart the country by April 29, regardless of the usual three-month validity period. This regulation is implemented annually in preparation for the peak Umrah season.
With these new visa options, Saudi Arabia aims to streamline pilgrimage travel, making it easier for GCC citizens to visit the holy sites. The initiative is expected to significantly boost religious tourism, reinforcing the country’s role as a global center for Islamic pilgrimage.
