Muscat: A premium Vodafone mobile number, 777777777, has been auctioned for a record 429,500 Omani riyals (approximately ₹1 crore). This makes it the most expensive mobile number ever sold in Oman. The auction, organized by Vodafone Oman, featured 200 premium numbers, including 171 diamond numbers and 29 gold numbers. Vodafone has announced that all proceeds from the auction will be donated to charity.
This marks the first time that the exclusive number 777777777 was available for bidding, attracting significant interest. Other fancy numbers, such as 777777776, 777777778, and 777770000, were also part of the auction. Vodafone extended its congratulations to the new owner of the number while emphasizing the significance of such premium sales in the telecom industry.
However, the auction has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with many questioning the extravagant price paid for a phone number. Ahmed Al Balushi, a social media user, commented that the money could have been used to pay off debts, buy a house, and live comfortably. Another user criticized the purchase, calling it an unnecessary expense. Despite the backlash, Vodafone maintains that the funds raised will benefit charitable causes.
