Obesity in Kuwait: A Growing Health Concern

Kuwait faces an alarming obesity crisis, with 77% of the population overweight and 40% classified as obese—the highest obesity rate in the Arab world. The situation is equally concerning for children, with obesity rates ranging between 23% and 26.9% among those aged 5 to 19. This trend poses a serious threat to the health of future generations, driven by factors such as sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary habits, and genetic predispositions. While genetic factors can influence obesity by up to 50%, the predominant causes remain unhealthy eating and lack of physical activity.

Lessons from Japan: A Model for Change

Japan, with an obesity rate of just 4%, provides an excellent model for combating this health issue. Through “Shokuiku” (nutrition education), Japanese schools teach children to develop lifelong healthy eating habits and prioritize physical activity. This cultural focus on nutrition and exercise has played a pivotal role in maintaining low obesity rates.

Steps Towards a Healthier Kuwait

To address the obesity epidemic, Kuwait must prioritize physical and nutritional education in schools. Currently, physical education is limited to two sessions per week in primary schools and only one in middle and secondary schools. Increasing these sessions and integrating comprehensive nutrition education can significantly reduce obesity rates and prevent associated chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

Promoting health awareness, improving school meals, and encouraging regular exercise are essential steps toward fostering a healthier lifestyle. By adopting a strategic, integrated approach that emphasizes education and lifestyle changes, Kuwait can safeguard the health of its future generations and combat the growing obesity crisis.
