MVD’s ‘No Meter, No Payment’ Initiative to Combat Autorickshaw Fare Overcharging

Thiruvananthapuram: The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has introduced a new measure to address complaints about autorickshaw drivers operating without meters and charging excessive fares. The department has decided to place a “No meter, no fare” sticker on autorickshaws, signaling that passengers are not obligated to pay if the meter is not used. This order will be issued shortly.

The initiative follows numerous reports from passengers and the police regarding the practice of overcharging and operating without meters. The decision was made at a recent Transport Authority meeting, aimed at implementing a permanent solution to the issue.

The stickers are expected to be affixed by the drivers themselves, with the official order likely to be released by the weekend. However, there are concerns about the practical effectiveness of this measure, particularly regarding whether the drivers and their associations will agree to comply with the new rule.
